vBrownBag – Mock Job Interview

Job interviews are tough. It’s the equivalent of both parties deciding whether they want to get married during the first date. So, imagine my surprise when Thom Greene asked me to conduct a mock interview with him in preparation for his job hunt. Thom was game enough to even allow me to record it as a vBrownBag session.

My advice for those job seekers:

  • Have an answer to “tell me about yourself” or “tell me about your experience” ready to go. Interviewers always ask it, and you want to be sure to nail this first part of the interview. Don’t just recite your work history, make yourself personable…show that you’re a human.
  • It is likely you will get asked why you are interested in this particular role and company. Consider why you’re interested in the function and identify a couple of key factors that make it a great fit for you. Additionally, I am always interested in how this position fits in with your career path.
  • I am a big believer in practicing like it is game day. Do as many mock interviews as you possibly can with a friend. You will become much better at answering, “What would you bring to the position?” by the 50th time you do it than you were the first time, right?
  • Prepare a few smart questions for when it is your turn to ask. Make sure they are thoughtful ones that show you have been paying attention and have done your homework when it comes to researching the company and the specific job you’re after.
  • Sometimes you may be asked analytical questions. It is important for you to think aloud. Many times it is not about your answer to the question as much as it is about your thought process. Talk through your thinking.
  • Be (at least semi-) confident.
